One thing everybody agrees on about The Curve is that people were having very different conversations in different circles. Here’s an attempt to paraphrase the ones I saw going on:
X risks people: AGI is basically steamrollering us and we’re all just trying to keep running in front of it telling everybody.
Technical alignment researchers: AGI is steamrollering us and we measured it! Here is how much it deceives and schemes and tries to protect itself at all cost.
Natsec people: AI is big weapon. Must beat China. Must use more AI for weapon.
Think tank people: Job loss! Whole sectors at once, not culturally or geographically distributed. Eventually there will be a big recession and capital will really automate things. Not sure what to do about it, maybe universal basic ownership? Anybody?
Arts people: The machine is not really conscious and also it’s THEFT. All this superintelligence stuff is hot air, the hyperscalers just want to defy all copyright and other laws and destroy the economy to line their pockets.
Biglabs: We are hyperscaling to a degree visible in GDP. We believe superintelligence is coming, we’re racing to build it, it’s already helping accelerate internally. We will destabilize nations and become the great powers of the future.
Policy people (R): Government will not be destabilized by corporations. We are partnering with Nvidia to make sure no regulations can be placed on corporations. Also we are in power now not the libs don’t forget it.
Policy people (D): Government must not be destabilized by corporations! Privacy! Labor union! Social media! Other things from the 2010s when we were in power and you had to listen to us!
Me and like two other people: Open source?? Anybody?
